Microsoft Is Ending Support for Windows 10 PC Version 1511 – Here Is How To Upgrade

As we draw near the release of the next big Windows 10 update, Microsoft is ending its official support for an older version of Windows 10. Today (October 10, 2017), Microsoft is pulling support for the Windows 10 PC version 1511 and will no longer receive any more security or quality updates from Microsoft. This end of service also impacts various editions including Windows 10 Home, Windows 10 Pro, Windows 10 Education and Windows 10 Enterprise.

Version 1511 was the first major update to Windows 10, which was first released to PCs in November 2015. In May this year, Microsoft ended support for the original release version of Windows 10 (now known as 1507) released in July 2015.

The end of support for Windows versions is due to Redmond’s shift to the ‘Windows as a Service’ (WaaS) model, allowing the company to release new features at a more rapid pace instead of clubbing them into a fresh Windows version. As a result, each new major release is only supported for a limited time.

What happens if I continue to use Windows 10 version 1511 (or an earlier version)?

While Windows 10 version 1511 will continue to run if you have it installed, you would become more vulnerable to security risks and viruses as there won’t be any security updates or other quality updates for newly discovered vulnerabilities and malware. So, the simplest solution, as Microsoft recommends, is to update to the latest version of Windows 10, the Anniversary Update (version 1607) or the Creators Update (version 1703). Users are advised to upgrade to the latest available version of Windows 10, i.e., the Creators Update.

How to Upgrade your PC to a Newer Version?

You can manually upgrade your machine to a newer version by heading to Microsoft’s software download page and clicking on ‘Update Now’ to get the Windows 10 Upgrade Assistant.

And if you are looking to be on the absolute latest, Microsoft is preparing to release the Fall Creators Update to everyone on October 17.

How do I know which version of Windows 10 I’m running?

If you need to find out which version of Windows 10 you’re running, you can do so by typing “winver” into your taskbar search and then press Enter. This opens the ‘About Windows’ dialog box, where you will see the version of Windows 10 that’s running on your device. If your version number is listed as 1511 (or an earlier version), you will have to update.

After October 10, 2017, Windows 10 devices running version 1511 will no longer receive security updates. Note that this change only applies to the PC version of the OS. Windows 10 Mobile version 1511 is still slated to be supported until January 8, 2018, despite not having received any updates in quite some time.
