Sony had some good news for owners of its Xperia Z smartphones. It will be updating all its premium models to Android 5.0 Lollipop. Unfortunately, no update has been released yet. Sony has promised to upgrade every device of the Xperia Z line and has posted a video of its progress showing Android 5.0 Lollipop running on the Sony Xperia Z3, Xperia Z2 and Xperia Z1. On Thursday Australian arm of the popular network carrier, Vodafone confirmed that the Android 5.0 Lollipop software is awaited for testing on Sony Xperia Z3 and Xperia Z2.
Besides the Z3 and Z2, the following Sony devices will also receive Lollipop updates (hopefully starting the next few months): The Xperia Z, Xperia ZL, Xperia ZR, Xperia Z1, Xperia Z1S, Xperia Z Ultra, Xperia Z1 Compact, Xperia Z3V, and the Xperia Z3 Compact. The Sony Xperia Z3, Xperia Z2 and Xperia Z1 will be the first to get it with the rest to follow later in 2015.
A manual download is available for the Z2 and Z3 now on the XDA developers forum, but that software is experimental and doesn’t include all features that are found in Lollipop. The question is, though, will the two phones update to 5.0 or straight to the latest 5.0.2.
In December, Sony has confirmed its intention to start a wider Android 5.0 update soon. A tweet from the official Xperia account reiterated the company’s plan to bring Android 5.0 to the Xperia Z3 and the Xperia Z2 in early 2015. Manufacturers like Samsung, LG, Motorola and HTC already updated some of their smartphones to Android 5.0, so Sony should really try to hurry things up.
Android 5.0 Lollipop OTA Update Release Imminent for Sony Xperia Z3, Z2 in February
A new image posted by Xperia Blog, a reliable source of Sony-related news, says that software testing of Android 5.0 Lollipop on the Xperia Z2 and Xperia Z3 will begin in February. Once the testing process is complete, Sony would commence global rollout of Android 5.0 Lollipop for the Xperia Z3 and Xperia Z2.
While we don’t have an exact release date of the Android 5.0 Lollipop update for the Xperia Z3 and Xperia Z2, we are sure that Sony will begin the rollout of the update in late February, or by March 2015.
