How to Write a Review

Leaving positive and negative reviews has become more common these days, especially since online shopping has become even more prominent during this age of technology. Reviews are incredibly important; many online shoppers rely on the information offered by reviews to make an informed decision as to whether they should push through in purchasing something.

It’s hard to rely on what the retailer or manufacturer states on their website. After all, they’re supposed to say good things about their products. It’s thanks to these reviews that we know if a company’s products are worth it. If you want to get into the habit of leaving customer reviews, here are a few tips to keep in mind.

Why Do Customers Write Reviews?

Basically, there are two main reasons why customers leave reviews. They could either be really happy with their order and the overall experience, or they’re incredibly unsatisfied. According to research conducted by TrustPilot, there are several reasons, some of which include:

  • Inform other potential customers if they were disappointed or frustrated with the experience they had
  • Praise the company if the received product was good or if the overall experience was positive
  • Share their personal experiences and thoughts regarding a product and the company itself

Tips on How to Write a Good Review

1. Be as Specific As Possible

There’s no rule that says your review shouldn’t be brief, but the more details you include and the more specific you are, the more people will find your review useful. As such, we highly recommend that you write a review from your own personal point of view and try to be as honest as possible.

2. Detail Your Overall Experience

In line with the first point, your review should address everything. For instance, you can mention whether your customer service experience with that company was satisfactory or not. Don’t just focus on one element about the product or company—in other words, discuss your overall experience. This ensures that readers and potential customers won’t have limited insight.

3. Offer Constructive Feedback to Help the Company

Asides from giving insight to potential customers, a good customer review offers feedback that can help the company know and work on its flaws. Offer your perspective on what you think the company is doing well along with details on which aspects they should improve.

4. Don’t Include Any Personal Information

As much as possible, you shouldn’t provide any identifying information in your review. This includes addresses, names, and phone numbers. While it’s completely understandable why you’d want to name names, especially when you had an awful experience, but this isn’t ethical practice and should be avoided.

5. Be Appropriate and Friendly

Always remember that reviews are posted on public forums, which means that anyone can on the internet can see and read it. While you have every right to express yourself in the way you see fit, you should always try to be civil and appropriate as much as possible. If you’ve had a bad experience with a certain company, it would be better if you calmly explain your situation and point of view. It’s up to the readers if they want to take the risk.

6. Go Over Your Review and Proofread

Once you’ve written your detailed and helpful review, don’t post it right away. Go through the entire paragraph and make sure you proofread. Ensure that your review makes sense and doesn’t have any typographical errors.


Reviews can really come in handy, especially for those customers who haven’t bought from a company yet but are planning to. These reviews can help calm anxious buyers and can give them peace of mind. If the company is full of negative reviews, this gives readers an idea to stay away from that company instead and look for another place for their needs.
