Hard drives are getting larger and larger, but somehow they always seem to fill up and run out of space. This is very true if you are using an SSD (solid-state drive), which offers much less hard drive space than traditional mechanical hard drives.
What do you do when you have so little hard drive space on Windows? Most people prioritize their data by juggling their files to avoid low storage space warnings.
If you don’t have enough free storage space on your hard drive to run Windows, you need to save space in any way possible. If you have already deleted all the excess data on your PC and still facing ‘C drive’ full or low disk space case, here is a method you should consider to solve this problem: compacting the operating system, which decreases the operating system’s size using a combination of compression and software tricks.
Implementing Compact OS can free around 1.5 GB (32-bit systems) or 2.6 GB (64-bit) of hard drive space. Note that compacting the OS is really only useful for those with tiny drives – It’s most suitable for 16 GB, 32 GB, and 64 GB eMMC modules or smaller SATA-attached SSD devices. Computers with vast amounts of storage don’t need Compact OS because the small increase in storage isn’t worth compacting for.
Usually compacting the OS takes some commands at the Command Prompt, but there’s a free tool that will do it easily for you instead: DISM++
Dism++ Windows optimizer
Dism++ is a free portable program for PCs running Microsoft Windows that comes with a complex mix of tools for cleaning and optimizing the system, managing startup items, drivers, Windows updates or features, and handling Windows image files. You can just roll in on DISM++ and perform all these operations quite conveniently and easily using its GUI.
The program is fully compatible with all versions of Windows starting with Windows Vista — and thus also with Windows 7 and 10 and available as a 32-bit, 64-bit, and a combined 32-bit/64-bit version.
- Once you’ve downloaded it, unzip the file and run either the Dism++ x64 or x86 version if you’re using a 64-bit or 32-bit version of Windows, respectively.
- Click on the ‘Disk Clean’ tab under the ‘Utilities’ header, that you can access from the left sidebar of application GUI.
- Now, hit the ‘None’ button at the bottom of the window to clear all check boxes, then check the Compact OS (Slower) box under the System header.
- Press the Scan button to analyze how much space this will save you.
- According to developers, this will save up to 33 % disk space.
