iOS 10 has been out for a few days now and already appears to be a significant success. It is undoubtedly an update you’ll want to get your hands on. It has been the biggest release in the history with a lot of features in it. Everything you love is now even better with iOS 10. This update helps you express yourself in bold new ways in Messages.
Relive memories like never before in Photos. And use the power of Siri in more apps than ever. There’s so much to say about iOS 10. Now if you’ve already become acquainted with some of the cool new features and usability tips baked into iOS 10, we’re back with yet another installment of cool iOS 10 features that might have escaped your attention.
Here are 23 things you can do with iOS 10 that you couldn’t do before:
1. Remove Some Of The Stock Apps:
iOS 10 lets you uninstall some of the stock apps. The process is just the same as you did earlier. Tap and hold on the app icon to see the small cross button. When you do this in iOS 10, you can see more apps (Maps, Podcasts, and Contacts) with cross buttons on them. If you miss them by mistake, you can reinstall from iTunes.
2. Pick Up Your iPhone To See Notifications:
Whenever you want to check the notifications without pushing buttons, you can use the new feature ‘Raise To Wake’ in iOS 10. The name itself tells you its function. Pick up your phone, and the lock screen appears. Note that it’s only available on the iPhone 6s and above models, and you can disable it through Display & Brightness in the Settings app.
3. Be More Expressive With Emoji:
iOS 10 is very Emoji friendly for a variety of reasons, not the least of which being that iOS 10 will incorporate more than 100 new emojis, As Apple describes it, the new emoji changes will bring “more gender options to existing characters, including new female athletes and professionals” while also adding “beautiful redesigns of popular emoji, a new rainbow flag, and more family options.” You’ll also note that Emoji in iOS 10 are three times bigger than before.
If you type a word that corresponds to an Emoji, like “Pizza” for example, the word will be highlighted and can quickly be replaced with a pizza icon with a simple tap.
4. Launch The Camera Faster Than Ever Before:
This feature is related to lock-screen. A single swipe to the left directs you into the camera. In iOS 9, you had to swipe up on the camera icon, and in iOS 10, this is a little easier. There’s no way to turn the feature off, but access to the photo library can be blocked when the camera app is launched in this way.
5. Use Siri With Third-Party Apps:
Apple made Siri available to app developers in iOS 10, so you can use the digital assistant to do more inside apps. With iOS 10, your favorite apps can now talk to Siri so you can search for photos, make payments, message friends, place calls, book rides and start workouts just by using your voice.
6. Turn Read Receipts On Or Off For Each Conversation:
iOS 10 finally lets users toggle Read Receipts on and off on an individual basis. This is a nice change from previous iterations of iOS where the feature was either turned off completely or applied to everyone in a user’s contacts. Tap the “i” icon at the top of any conversation and you’ll see a new Send Read Receipts switch you can toggle on or off. This only works with iMessage threads, not with standard SMS messages.
7. Make Sure You’re Getting Enough Sleep:
This feature is new to the Clock app. It is Bedtime feature that’s designed to help you maintain the timetable of your sleep. It helps you get into bed and out of bed at the same times each day. You have to set the times and which days, etc. iPhone buzzes you to do so.
8. Deal With Notifications On The Lock Screen:
In iOS, the way notifications work has been restored. This helps you more inline functionality than iOS 9 when you don’t want to have to open the app. What you get depends on the app, but if you hard-press an alert or swipe left and tap View for non-3D Touch devices, you can see what options you have.
9. Deal With Notifications From Other Apps:
If you get an alert when you are in some work or another app, you can drag down on it to open it up in a pop-up window on top of the existing app. To get at the inline features from the Notification Center, use the same actions as on the lock screen. A hard-press if you’ve got 3D Touch on your device, a swipe left, and then View if you haven’t.
10. Find Out Where You Parked Your Car:
Apple Maps helps you where you have parked your car. This feature helps us when we are at similar looking streets or a huge park. Everything works automatically. When you stop driving, Apple shows a notification and it drops a pin at the relevant location (tap the alert for details), a pin you can then use to navigate your way back to your motor.
11. Quickly Unsubscribe From Mailing Lists:
In iOS 10, Apple introduced an Unsubscribed link for emails that come from mailing lists. Most probably, the app scans the message for any mention of “unsubscribe.” Tap the blue shortcut link, then confirm your choice on the next pop-up, and Mail will send a message on your behalf, telling the sender that you’re no longer interested in receiving these emails in the future.
12. Get To Your Regular Places More Quickly:
In iOS 10, on the front screen, swipe up on the search box to see places you visit or search for regularly. It looks at destinations you’ve visited in the recent past, places that you’ve searched for, and locations logged in your calendar to make some of them accessible with a tap.
13. Stop Off Somewhere En Route:
In iOS 10, the mapping tool gives you live traffic information en route during your journey. You can zoom in and out and pan ahead to check for queues, and if you tap the route summary panel at the bottom of the screen, you can search for and add nearby food stops or gas stations along the way.
14. Clear Out Tunes You Never Listen To:
We always battle to keep enough free space on our phone and it isn’t an easy task. But in iOS 10, a new feature helps you in this regard. Go to Settings, then Music, and you’ll see a new Optimize Storage heading. If you have iCloud Music Library enabled, turn this toggle switch to the ON position, and iOS 10 then takes it upon itself to delete the local copies of tracks you haven’t listened to in a while if you’re low on space.
15. Run Smarter Searches In Photos:
Apple has packed some new picture processing features in iOS 10. Now, the Photos app can more readily find whatever you want to search for, whether it’s a date or a place or a person. Try searching such as “sunset” or “landmark” or “beach” to put the new Photos feature to the test.
16. Change The Intensity Of The Flashlight:
In iOS 10, pull up the Control Center and then hard-press the flashlight icon, you’ll see an intensity menu where you can choose low, medium or high. For phones without 3D Touch, the option isn’t available.
17. Be More Expressive With Your Messages:
iMessage in Message app has been upgraded with the likes of WhatsApp and SnapChat. It is included with doodles, GIFs, and stickers. Tap the heart icon to send sketches or videos. Type your message and then press and hold the blue send button to see a choice of options. You can change its ‘weight’ or send it as ‘invisible ink’, which needs to be scratched off.
18. Replace Text With Emojis:
Nowadays, words are outdated and emojis and symbols are replaced. So, Apple wants to make it easier for you to embed emoji characters in your iMessages. If you write out a message and then tap the emoji icon, you’ll notice words that can be replaced by an emoji in the text are highlighted. Tap on any of them to replace the word with a picture.
19. Get Lyrics To Songs On Apple Music:
In iOS 10, a lyrics option has been added to the menu on the Now Playing screen. Tap the three dots to see it. Note that not all tracks have lyrics attached to them. If you can’t see the option then it’s not available for the current song. It is helpful to the people who enjoy karaoke.
20. Manage Your Smart Home More Intuitively:
Many of us aren’t using HomeKit to manage your smart home, but Apple has bought a new app in iOS 10 and it is called Home that’s designed as a friendly way into your various HoemKit devices and settings. It lets you group settings together in particular scenes.
21. Copy And Paste Between Multiple Devices:
In iOS 10, a new feature called Universal Clipboard is introduced. You can copy something on your Mac and paste it on your iPhone, or vice versa, as long as you’re signed into the same Apple ID on all the devices involved. It works pretty much invisible, and there’s no extra menu option. Just use the copy and paste functions as you normally would.
22. Get Your Voicemails Transcribed:
In the Phone app, Voicemails is improved as they automatically transcribe. It’s switched on by default, though availability may vary between countries and carriers. Go to the Voicemail tab of the Phone app, and alongside each of your missed calls you’ll see a transcription or the message “transcription not available”. The service is still in beta.
23. Type In Multiple Languages More Easily:
iOS 10 gives you the option of typing in multiple languages on your iDevice. In Settings, go to General and open the Dictionary and select the required languages. Now go to the Keyboards to add the matching keyboards.
