Not being able to play a game you love can be very frustrating. Imagine feeling excited to sit back, relax, and enjoy a good game after school or work only to find out that the game keeps crashing. Well, this is the case for many Fortnite players playing on Windows. Unfortunately, this is quite a common issue, but on the bright side, it’s not the end yet—there are different ways you can fix this error.
What Is Fortnite?
Released in 2017, Fortnite is one of the biggest and most popular video games developed by Epic Games. It’s known as a free-to-play battle royale with a variety of game modes you can choose from, so you’ll definitely find something that suits your style of gaming. It’s such a popular title that it won an award during the 2019 Game Awards for the Best Ongoing Game. Even today, Fortnite’s popularity still continues.
How to Stop the Game From Crashing
If you’ve been wanting to play Fortnite but, for some reason, it keeps crashing whenever you’re trying to play, we’ve found a couple of ways to fix the issue. Follow any one of the methods below and you should be good to go.
Update Your Graphics Card Driver
Have you checked on your graphics card driver recently? Is it up to date or is it still working as it should? If a device’s graphics card driver is outdated or corrupted, this can cause issues when playing games like Fortnite. To fix this, all you need to do is either reinstall the device driver or update it.
Here are the steps to do that:
1. Press the Windows key + R key at the same time to trigger the Run tool.
2. Type in devmgmt.msc in the field and enter to open up the Device Manager.
3. Tap the arrow beside Display adapters to see a list of all your graphics card drivers.
4. Right-click on the graphics card and tap on Update driver.
5. Simply follow the instructions provided to you to successfully update the driver.
6. Restart your PC after updating and then launch Fortnite to see if the issue has been fixed.
Check the System Requirements
One of the first things you need to do if or when your game crashes is check your PC’s specs and Fortnite’s minimum system requirements. You need to make sure that your PC is capable of playing a game as heavy as Fortnite, especially since it has very high resolutions and requires quite a lot in order to play smoothly. If your computer doesn’t reach the game’s minimum requirements, there’s a very high chance that Fortnite will freeze, crash, or lag.
For your reference, here are Fortnite’s minimum system requirements:
- CPU: Core i3 2.4 GHz
- CPU SPEED: Info
- RAM: 4 GB
- OS: Windows 7/8/10 64-bit
- VERTEX SHADER: 3.0
- PIXEL SHADER: 3.0
- VIDEO CARD: Intel HD 4000
Re-Install the Epic Games Launcher
You can also try reinstalling the Epic Games launcher. This is a digital storefront platform similar to Steam, and it’s where you can download and install Fortnite for free. Uninstall Fortnite first and then reinstall. After, restart your PC and then check if Fortnite still crashes for you.
Lower Your Game Graphics Settings
There’s a chance that Fortnite is crashing for you because your graphics settings are too high. If this is the case, simply lower the game’s graphics settings before playing. You’ll definitely see a huge difference, as the game will no longer be crashing.
Stop Overclocking Your PC’s CPU
Have you increased your CPU’s speed just so you can play Fortnite on your PC? If this is the case, then that’s probably why the game keeps freezing or crashing. If you want to play the popular battle royale, we’re sad to say that overclocking your CPU isn’t the way to go because you’ll end up putting the game’s stability at risk. Put the speed back to default and Fortnite should no longer crash.
1. Restart your PC and when the manufacturer’s logo appears on the screen, press the F2 button to be redirected to BIOS.
2. Head over to the Advanced tab.
3. Look for the Performance section and then go to the Overclocking option. Disable it once you’ve found it.
4. Save the changes you’ve made and leave BIOS.
5. Restart your PC.
If you’re been experiencing this issue wherein Fortnite keeps on crashing or freezing, leaving you unable to play, then you should definitely try out these steps. If none of these methods work for you, this may be a sign that you have to upgrade your system in order to play. But before that, try these fixes first.
